I am a scientist with years experience at the Smithsonian Institution in large-scale data projects in environmental sciences. My expertise includes large databases, advanced statistical modeling in R or C++, and web data, and covering marine biology and forestry. I have worked as a consultant in many aspects of environmental monitoring and life cycle assessment in North America, South America, Africa, and Europe.
Don't pay for statistical software. I can show you how to do it all on your own in R. Contact me via text or email.
Services offered:
I write software to solve problems of any complexity, simple regression, mark-recapture, to complex, non-linear models with dozens of predictors and random effects, mostly using the freely-available statistical software R. I will solve your analytic problem using built-in regression packages in R when they are adequate, or I will prepare my own Bayesian algorithms for complicated, hierarchical models. Graphical visualizations and maps will be provided to understand data and confirm modeling results. I provide you all source code with enough assistance and documentation so you can use it yourself in the future.
I learned database design, using the freely available MySQL, after too long working with complicated data using spreadsheets and ascii files. I will design a database for you of any size or complexity, and provide SQL routines for screening and extracting data. I will offer all source code and sufficient documentation so you can manage the database yourself.
I write HTML to set up web pages, usually using PhP as a tool to compartmentalize code. I can also design a page for your blog in Wordpress, then make sure you can maintain it yourself.
Much of my web work includes building access to large databases via the web. I can set up PhP to query MySQL databases via web forms, allowing data to be screened and downloaded, then included R Shiny applications to create online analyses and graphical presenatations. I will provide source and documentation so you can use and extend your own data-rich web page.
I will teach workshops in any of these fields -- analysis, database, web queries -- providing instruction in R, PhP, MySQL, Shiny. I frequently do this for college students in science or other quantitative fields, and I am ready to present in either English and Spanish.
I am working with a team of environmental scientists to design conservation offsets ahead of the planned interoceanic canal across the country. I wrote this article on the topic in 2015.
I designed forest observation projects in Panama, Ecuador, the US, Cameroon, and the Congo. I wrote this article many years ago describing early stages.
I have worked with a team of environmental scientists to publish rigorous standards for assessing the impact of forestry-related industry. Life-cycle assessments indicates that the goal is to measure the impact over all phases, from initial forest harvest to waste products at the end of treatment. My expertise is in the precise measurement of how a forest is altered by the harvest of whatever products are required, usually but not always wood.
A teak plantation in Panama developed by an environmentally-aware business sought my services in documenting, and reducing, impact on the plantation and surrounding forest. I designed system of documenting native species present in the teak plantation compared to native forest.
